The MHL conducts intensive research in the fields of musicology, music education, music theory and educational science. With the Brahms Institute as an affiliated institute, the MHL also has an internationally renowned research institute with a significant collection of sources.

The MHL awards doctoral degrees in musicology, music theory and music education. A doctoral colloquium serves as a forum for professional exchange between doctoral students and supervisors, and also intensifies relations with the research landscape in 欧洲杯网投_欧洲杯哪里投注-官网直播 and its scientific and cultural institutions. In addition to the Brahms Institute's series of publications, the MHL has its own academic publication medium in the form of the ‘Schriften der Musikhochschule 欧洲杯网投_欧洲杯哪里投注-官网直播’ (Publications of the 欧洲杯网投_欧洲杯哪里投注-官网直播 University of Music), edited by Prof. Dr Oliver Korte.

The results of the research are presented to the public at regular international symposia, in publications, exhibitions and catalogues.

Doc?toral Pro?gram?me

At the MHL, it is possible to obtain a doctoral degree in musicology, music theory and music education. The doctorate serves as proof of special aptitude for in-depth, independent academic work. According to the doctoral regulations, this is based on the writing of a dissertation and an oral examination – consisting of a disputation and a rigorous examination. Another mandatory component is regular participation in the graduate colloquium. Successful graduates are awarded the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The programme is aimed at particularly qualified applicants who have completed a diploma, master's or master's degree with a proven focus in one of the three aforementioned doctoral subjects at an artistic or scientific university with a minimum overall grade of ‘good’. Alternatively, the first state examination for teaching with a major in music – also passed with a grade of at least ‘good’ – is a prerequisite for admission to the doctoral programme at the MHL. Further conditions and regulations for admission can be found in the doctoral regulations. The written application for admission with all the documents specified in § 8 of the doctoral regulations should be sent directly to the chair of the doctoral committee.
