MusiS – Music in Schools

Jugendliche stehen in einem MUsikraum vor einem Schaubild und erkl?ren ihren Mitschüler:innen, wie eine Tuba funktioniert.

In recent years, the MHL has redesigned its degree programmes, adapting them in particular to the constantly changing requirements of artistic and educational practice. This led to the creation of the ?MusiS – Music in Schools? project, an innovative university teaching concept that aims to link students' education even more closely to their future teaching practice than before.

MusiS – Cooperation formats between schools and universities

The central goal of MusiS is to intensify cooperation between schools and educational institutions (music universities). The following options and formats are available for this purpose:

  • School clubs and projects

At the request of schools, MHL students support teachers in working groups and projects outside of regular music lessons (e.g. in the areas of orchestra, chamber music, choir, percussion ensemble, big band, musical, digital media, etc.).

The development and implementation of project concepts is an important part of school music studies, so another option is for MHL students to approach schools with the offer of implementing projects developed at the university in individual schools.

  • University teaching and school teaching

Reflection on (music) teaching is at the heart of the educational science and music education training at the MHL. Classic university teaching formats such as lectures and seminars are to be linked even more closely to concrete practice with the inclusion of MusiS. This can be achieved through topic-related school visits or by inviting teachers to the MHL as experts on specific topics.

  • Teaching research

Research questions from school practice are often examined as part of student qualification theses (bachelor's/master's theses). MusiS aims to coordinate this process and facilitate students' access to the ?field of research?, while also enabling schools to articulate specific research/knowledge interests that can then be addressed by students in the context of corresponding research projects (e.g. an evaluation study of a school's arts and culture project week). Ideally, the formats listed above will result in added value for all involved: students will have the opportunity to test and further develop their pedagogical/scientific skills in practice. At the same time, teachers can help shape the training of future music educators and gain insights into current music didactic concepts and research.

MusiS – Project example: From idea to song – Future Songwriting as a phase-connecting network project within the framework of music teacher training

Creativity is a muscle that we all possess and that becomes stronger and better the more we train it. The use of digital media can help develop one's own means of expression and offers a wide range of potential in school music lessons, particularly when composing and producing one's own songs. The aim of the Future Songwriting music teacher training programme, developed by a team of Finnish experts in Helsinki, is to train music teachers at this very interface between creativity and digital media in the context of teaching. At the MHL, the Future Songwriting concept is being taken up as part of this year's school internship in the Bachelor of Arts programme and expanded into a phase-connecting network project with seven schools in 欧洲杯网投_欧洲杯哪里投注-官网直播 and the surrounding area. Twenty-five students and their 13 mentors will have the opportunity to learn the essentials of creative work with digital media in school classrooms in a three-day kick-off workshop with the Finnish team and then apply and implement what they have learned directly in the school classrooms. The songs created during this workshop were presented in concerts on 17 and 18 March 2022, including at the MHL.

MusiS – How can my school become a partner school?

Any general education school interested in intensive cooperation with the MHL can become a partner school. To become a partner school, please contact coordinator Carl Philipp Drese. Once the cooperation agreement has been concluded, specific arrangements can be made regarding the formats listed above, which can be implemented on a one-off basis or regularly over several semesters.

MusiS team

The Ministry of Education and Vocational Training of the State of Schleswig-Holstein supports MusiS by seconding a music teacher from the school system to the MHL. This secondment is carried out by a teacher at a general education school. Prof. Dr. Annette Ziegenmeyer (music education) is responsible for the scientific management of the MusiS project.
